American actress Sally Kirkland, best known for her Academy Award-nominated performance in the 1987 film Anna, has died at the age of 84.
Her representative, Michael Greene, confirmed she passed away early Tuesday morning at 1:50 a.m. PT.
The news comes just two days after it was revealed that Kirkland had entered hospice care while battling dementia.
According to those close to her, she had been living in a private care facility where family and friends gathered with her on Halloween to mark her birthday.
In recent years, Kirkland had faced a series of serious health challenges.

In 2024, she sustained multiple fractures — four bones in her neck, her right wrist, and her left hip — and later developed two life-threatening infections during her recovery. Supporters launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical costs her insurance did not fully provide for. She later required full-time care.
“Sally is now receiving 24/7 care in a specialized facility that is providing wonderful safety and care,” her supporters wrote at the time. Last week, they confirmed she had entered hospice, adding, “Sally is grateful for your kindness and love… Please hold and send the light for Sally.”
Born in New York City, Kirkland began her career in the 1960s Off-Broadway scene and was part of Andy Warhol’s famed artistic circle, known as The Factory. Over the course of her decades-long career, she appeared in more than 200 films and television projects, including roles in Charlie’s Angels, JFK, and Bruce Almighty.
Her critically acclaimed role in Anna earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, solidifying her status as one of Hollywood’s most respected performers of her time.
Kirkland was briefly married to Michael Jarrett from 1974 to 1975 and had no children.
