Kenyatta University has commended the Chinese government for supporting higher education through scholarships and academic partnerships that are helping expand learning opportunities for Kenyan students.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, John Okumu, said China has played a key role in supporting vulnerable learners while strengthening educational ties between Kenya and China.
Speaking during a Chinese language proficiency contest for high school students in Nairobi, Okumu said at least 25 Kenyatta University students benefit from Chinese-sponsored scholarships every year, helping ease financial barriers and enabling them to pursue studies in Chinese language and culture.
“This initiative has significantly widened access to higher education while nurturing globally competitive graduates,” Okumu said in a speech delivered on his behalf by David Minja, the Executive Dean of the School of Law, Arts and Social Sciences.

According to the speech, 20 Kenyatta University students secured scholarships to study at Shandong Normal University in 2025, with more than 300 students benefiting from similar opportunities over the years.
The collaboration between the university and China also extends beyond scholarships to include faculty exchange programmes, curriculum development and the expansion of Chinese language training through the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University.
Ibrahim Mathew emerged winner of the language contest, which brought together 16 students from various schools across the country.

The competition, held as part of the annual Chinese Bridge Contest, saw participants answer language-related questions and showcase talents in different performances.
Zhou Xiaodong, Director of the Confucius Institute, said participation in the competition had increased compared to last year.
“This continues to serve as a platform for nurturing young talent while strengthening people-to-people connections between the two nations,” Zhou said.
