Kenyatta University (KU) has issued an urgent warning after a fake memo circulated online claiming that all students must pay Sh10,000 for registration.
In a notice dated February 2, 2026, the university said the forged document has been spreading on platforms such as WhatsApp. The memo falsely instructed students to pay the money to submit Semester I 2025/2026 reports by January 28, 2026.
Kenyatta University dismissed the memo as fake, saying it did not issue any such directive.
“This document is FAKE. Kenyatta University has NOT issued any memo requiring students to pay Sh10,000 or submit school reports by that date,” the university said in a statement.
The university clarified that no fee is required for submitting school or end-of-semester reports. It added that all official communication is shared only through verified channels, including student emails, the KU student portal, the official KU website, and verified social media pages.

Students and parents were advised to confirm any urgent fee or deadline messages with the relevant school, department, or the Office of the Academic Registrar before taking action.
KU also warned students not to make payments or share personal information based on the fake memo.
“Please do not make any payments or share personal details based on this fake document. Report any suspicious messages and remain vigilant,” the university said.
The institution noted that such fraud attempts are not new. In the past, KU students have been targeted using fake notices, including false closure memos in 2017 and fake exam card payment demands in 2016.
During student unrest in November 2017, several misleading closure notices circulated online, some demanding fake fees. At the time, the university dismissed the messages and warned students against falling victim to scams.
In 2019, KU also dismissed a forged notice that claimed students had been fined Sh9,999 for alleged damages.
