The University of Michigan and Michigan State University have been ranked among the world’s top 100 universities for 2026, according to a global list released by TIME magazine.
In TIME’s World’s Top Universities of 2026 rankings, the University of Michigan placed ninth globally, while Michigan State University was ranked 84th, underscoring the strong international standing of higher education institutions in the United States.
The rankings were produced in partnership with Statista R, a firm specializing in market and consumer data, following what TIME described as a comprehensive assessment of leading universities worldwide. The evaluation was based on three main pillars: academic capacity and performance, innovation and economic impact, and global engagement.
According to the methodology outlined by the media organization, institutions were scored across each pillar, with the results aggregated into a final overall score. The University of Michigan achieved a total score of 84.65, while Michigan State University recorded a score of 64.27.
The University of Oxford in the United Kingdom topped the global rankings. It was followed by Yale University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Chicago, completing the top five universities worldwide.
