Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is giving credit to Moana’s costume department for his new look in the live-action remake of the beloved Disney movie.
After being spotted looking notably bulkier on set, the actor admitted that his muscular appearance didn’t come from the gym but rather from a detailed suit.
“That’s a suit that took a long time to put on,” Dwayne explained in a Nov. 25 interview with Extra.
“When you say, ‘You bulked up,’ that means you couldn’t tell.”
He praised Oscar-winning makeup artist Joel Harlow for designing the elaborate bodysuit, which requires hours of transformation each day.
Though the production crew worked hard to keep the transformation under wraps, paparazzi managed to snap photos of the actor on set in Hawaii.
“We were putting up walls so there was no paparazzi, but they got into boats and started shooting pictures,” he shared.
Fans will have to wait until 2026 to see Dwayne bring Maui to life in the live-action remake, but they can enjoy the release of Moana 2, which features his daughters, Jasmine, 8, and Tiana, 6, voicing new characters.
Dwayne shared the excitement his daughters felt seeing themselves on screen, saying, “They loved it… They’re just like, ‘That’s me!’ It was so cool.”
