Kenyan musician Ted Kalanda Harrison, the founder of the legendary band Them Mushrooms, has passed away at the age of 72. Kalanda, who had been battling cancer since 2018, died at his rural home in Kaloleni, Kilifi County. His death marks the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most influential musical acts.
Kalanda’s younger brother, John Katana, now the band leader, confirmed the news on Tuesday. “It has been a long, painful journey for our eldest brother, who was a source of inspiration to all of us,” Katana said.
A Musical Legacy Originating in Mombasa
Ted Kalanda was born into a family deeply rooted in music and founded Them Mushrooms in 1972. Originating from Mombasa, the band quickly gained fame for its unique fusion of coastal rhythms and modern sounds. The original lineup included Kalanda’s late brothers George Zirro and John Katana, along with Billy Sarro and Denis Kalume.
Throughout the decades, Them Mushrooms evolved while maintaining a family core, with Katana and Sarro continuing the band’s legacy. In the late 1980s, the band relocated to Nairobi and solidified its place in Kenyan music history with the acclaimed album At the Carnivore.
Them Mushrooms’ discography features timeless hits such as “Unkula Huu,” “Wazee Wakatike,” “Nyambura,” “Ndogo Ndogo,” “Embe Dodo Dodo,” and “Hapo Kale.” The band briefly rebranded as Uyoga Band in 2002 but soon returned to their original name, staying true to their roots.
Kalanda’s Enduring Influence and Personal Legacy
Ted Kalanda’s impact extended beyond his musical contributions. His eldest son, Henry Harrison, is a musician based in Sweden, continuing his father’s musical legacy. Henry is married to fellow musician Lioness Afreeka, further intertwining the family’s musical heritage.
Despite losing his eyesight due to cancer, Kalanda remained a symbol of resilience and passion. His ability to inspire generations and shape the Kenyan music scene underscores the lasting power of his work.
