Thailand’s Regional Container Lines (RCL) has announced plans to expand its shipping operations into East Africa, with the Port of Mombasa set to become a key regional hub.
The announcement was made by RCL Regional Vice President Capt. Derek during a meeting with Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Capt. William Ruto in Mombasa.
RCL is a Thai-based container shipping company with over 40 years of experience in global shipping, especially in feeder services that connect major ports. The company operates a fleet of vessels ranging from small ships carrying 400 containers to large vessels carrying up to 12,000 containers.
Capt. William Ruto welcomed the move, saying KPA is ready to support RCL’s expansion as the port continues to invest in expansion and modern equipment to improve efficiency and service delivery.
“We welcome your plans to grow with us as we modernise the port to make it more efficient,” he said.
The two sides discussed possible areas of cooperation in logistics and maritime services, aimed at boosting regional trade and strengthening East Africa’s links to global markets.
Also present at the meeting was RCL’s shipping agent, Sharaf Shipping Agency (K) Limited, led by General Manager Kaushik Bhattacharya, which already operates at the Port of Mombasa.
