Linda Stevenson, the wife of Bill Stevenson—former husband of U.S. First Lady Jill Biden—has been found dead at her home in Delaware. She was 64.
According to a statement from the New Castle County Police Department, officers responded to a reported domestic dispute at a residence on Idlewood Road in the Oak Hill community late on December 28 at around 11:16 p.m. local time. Authorities discovered Linda Stevenson’s body in the living room of the home.
Police said officers immediately attempted life-saving measures, but she was later pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been filed, and investigators say the case remains under investigation.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene, while the Delaware Division of Forensic Science is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Attempts have been made to reach Bill Stevenson for comment.
A Connection to Jill Biden’s Early Life
Bill Stevenson was previously married to Jill Biden, now 74, long before her life in national politics. The two married in 1970 while she was still in college and divorced five years later in 1975.
Jill Biden has rarely spoken publicly about the marriage. However, biographer Julie Pace said in a 2022 interview that the relationship deeply affected her early adulthood.
“She had expectations of what that marriage was going to be, and it didn’t live up to them,” Pace explained. “She was incredibly young and probably a bit naive about what life was going to look like, and it really stung her.”
Pace added that the divorce was one of several disappointments Jill Biden learned to compartmentalize as she moved forward with her life and career.
Following the divorce, Jill Biden focused on rebuilding her life and professional path. She later married Joe Biden in 1977, and the couple remain married today.
