Flo: From Rising Stars To R&B Trailblazers

Flo’s journey from breakout stars to R&B powerhouses has been anything but ordinary.

The London-based trio—Jorja Douglas, Renée Downer, and Stella Quaresma—burst onto the scene with Cardboard Box, a sharp anthem about moving on from a cheating ex.

The track’s infectious harmonies and retro R&B vibe drew comparisons to icons like En Vogue and Destiny’s Child, catapulting Flo to win the BBC’s Sound of 2023 poll and the Brit Award for Rising Star.

Their momentum seemed unstoppable with Fly Girl, featuring Missy Elliott, securing their first Top 40 hit.

Yet, the much-anticipated debut album Access All Areas faced repeated delays, sparking rumors of behind-the-scenes struggles.

However, the trio dismissed speculation, insisting their focus was on creating a record that truly reflected their artistry.

With guidance from US management company LVRN, known for working with Summer Walker and 6lack, Flo reevaluated their sound, scrapping completed tracks and starting fresh.

The result was worth the wait. Released last month, Access All Areas received critical acclaim. Pitchfork rated it 8 out of 10, calling it a masterclass in harmonies and irresistible hooks.

The UK charts reflected the praise, with the album debuting at number three—the highest position for a British R&B girl group since Mis-Teeq’s Lickin’ On Both Sides in 2001.

Flo’s rise is more than just timing. The music industry’s historical struggle to support Black female artists in the UK has left many R&B talents overlooked.

On I’m Just A Girl, Flo confronts this reality, addressing the lack of representation and systemic barriers.

“We’re happy to be seen as a catalyst for change,” says Quaresma, though she acknowledges there’s still work to be done.

Balancing mainstream appeal with authentic R&B roots, Flo skillfully navigates both worlds. Singles like Walk Like This lean pop, while Caught Up stays true to sultry R&B grooves.

Their versatility has drawn admiration from stars like Beyoncé, who hosted them at her Renaissance tour, and Kehlani, with whom they toured the US.

As they envision their future, Flo remains grounded, laughing about selling off treadmills meant to build stage stamina and failing miserably at riding a mechanical bull after a US show.

But with Access All Areas establishing them as serious contenders, their playful charm and undeniable talent ensure they’re here to stay.
