Nearly 20 years after accusing Duke University lacrosse players Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans of rape in 2006, Crystal Mangum has publicly admitted she lied.
Speaking from the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, where she is serving a sentence for second-degree murder unrelated to the case, Mangum expressed remorse during a podcast interview.
“That night, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and Dave Evans… trusted me,” she said, acknowledging her false testimony.
“I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t.” Mangum admitted she made up the story seeking validation and now hopes for their forgiveness.
The 2006 allegations led to the players’ arrests and charges, but the case fell apart due to a lack of DNA evidence.
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper declared the players innocent and declined to prosecute Mangum for perjury, citing concerns about her mental state.
Reflecting on her actions, Mangum said, “Everything happens to get everybody to the point where they are… to show God’s love and His forgiveness.”
