Prince William has expressed his desire to reshape his role as Prince of Wales to better connect with a younger generation.
During his recent trip to South Africa for his Earthshot environmental prize, the prince spoke candidly about how he wants to approach his royal responsibilities in a way that resonates with today’s society.
“I’m trying to do it differently and for my generation,” Prince William said, emphasizing his aim to modernize the royal role.
He described it as taking a “smaller R in royal,” signaling a more personal and less traditional approach to his position in public life.
Prince William’s comments reflect his view on the evolving nature of royalty, suggesting that the formalities and traditions associated with the monarchy don’t always align with his vision.
He explained that his focus is on creating positive change through “impact philanthropy, collaboration, convening, and helping people,” and stressed the importance of empathy in leadership. “I think we could do with some more empathetic leadership around the world,” he added.
His trip to South Africa marked the longest period of media interaction he has had this year, and he was notably open about both his personal life and royal duties. He shared lighthearted moments, such as discussing his new sustainable wardrobe and a bracelet made for him by his daughter.

However, the impact of the past year was also evident in his words. It has been a challenging time for the prince, with both his wife, Catherine, and his father, King Charles, undergoing cancer treatment. “It’s been the hardest year of my life,” he admitted.
As the future King, the pressure of his royal responsibilities weighs heavily on him, and he has worked to find a way to fulfill his duties while staying true to himself. By focusing on a smaller number of projects, he hopes to make a deeper impact, with key initiatives like the Earthshot Prize and his homelessness project, Homewards.
Despite the challenges, including criticism of the royal family’s finances and concerns about potential hypocrisy due to his privilege, Prince William is determined to continue his work.
Supporters close to him argue that the prince’s efforts to improve the world should not be overshadowed by his wealth and status. “It would be far worse if I did nothing,” he said, reflecting on the responsibility he feels to use his position for good.
