Eric Njoka Reveals Career Setback That Shaped His Path

Kenyan journalist and news anchor Eric Njoka has shared a deeply personal and distressing experience from his career that left him profoundly impacted. In a recent post, Njoka revealed that his participation in the prestigious CNN Journalism Fellowship (CJF) in 2011 was abruptly halted due to interference from a former manager at the TV station where he was employed at the time.

The Disruption of a Career Milestone

Njoka had been selected for the CNN Journalism Fellowship, a significant career opportunity that would have placed him among an elite group of journalists from around the world. However, he recounted receiving a frantic message from CNN organizers the day before his scheduled departure for Atlanta. The message informed him that his participation was canceled following communication from his office.

Despite his and CNN’s efforts to resolve the situation, Njoka described the response from his former employer as rude and uncooperative. “I was devastated, humiliated, and felt dejected. My boss had not only blocked a massive career opportunity but refused to engage or offer an explanation,” Njoka wrote.

Personal Impact and Regret

The incident marked a significant turning point in Njoka’s life. He expressed the profound pain of losing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the disappointment of seeing his mother’s reaction, who had been thrilled about his achievement. Although Njoka has continued to build a successful career, the emotional scars from the lost opportunity remain.

During the fellowship, CNN had planned to cover Njoka’s travel expenses, accommodation, and daily living costs, with the program scheduled to run from October 10 to October 28, 2011. The organization had also arranged for a visa to facilitate his travel to the United States.

Eric Njoka’s Career Journey

Despite this setback, Njoka’s career has flourished. His journey in journalism began in the early 2000s, with roles in radio and TV at Kameme FM and K24 TV in Nairobi. He gained prominence as the anchor of Talk Central, a TV program covering social, political, and current affairs.

In 2021, Njoka expanded his international reach by joining WION, part of Zee Media Corporation Limited in Noida, India. Currently, he anchors global news, presenting stories from Africa and around the world, and continues to cover breaking news and deliver comprehensive news packages.
