Former Hollyoaks Star Ali Bastian Shares Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Ali Bastian, widely known for her role in Hollyoaks, has opened up about her recent diagnosis of stage two breast cancer. The 42-year-old actress discovered a lump while breastfeeding her child, initially believing it was a blocked milk duct.

In an interview with OK! Magazine, Bastian described the news as a “complete shock.” She shared, “There are mornings when I wake up having forgotten about it, and then suddenly it all comes flooding back. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.”

After noticing the persistent lump, Bastian sought medical advice when antibiotics didn’t resolve the issue. She is now undergoing chemotherapy, with plans for a single mastectomy followed by radiotherapy.

Reflecting on her journey, Bastian explained, “It wasn’t going away, and the more I checked, the more I realized this wasn’t just a blocked duct. My GP was very supportive, and I was quickly referred to a breast clinic.”

Living in Ireland with her husband, David O’Mahony, and their two daughters, Isabella (19 months) and Isla (4), Bastian has been open with her children about her condition. She thoughtfully explained her diagnosis to her eldest daughter, saying, “She knows that Mummy had a sore boob. We told her I’m going to take some strong medicine and that Mummy’s going to have a fun, crazy haircut for a little while.”

To support her mental health, the actress is also seeing a psychologist specializing in cancer care. Despite the challenges, Bastian remains optimistic about her treatment, noting that her doctors are focused on a full recovery. “I’m determined to get through this and get back to my acting career,” she said.

In fact, her love for acting remains strong, with Bastian expressing a longing to return to work. “I recently felt a strong urge to be back on set, doing what I love. I really miss it.”

Louise Grimsdell, a senior clinical nurse with Breast Cancer Now, emphasized the importance of breast health awareness, particularly for younger women. “While breast cancer is less common in younger women, around 5,000 women aged 45 or under are diagnosed each year in the UK. Ali’s story highlights the importance of checking for changes, even during breastfeeding.”

How to Check for Breast Cancer Symptoms

It’s essential to consult a doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • A new lump or thickened area in the breast
  • Changes in the size or shape of one or both breasts
  • Discharge from the nipple
  • A lump or swelling near the armpit
  • Skin changes like dimpling, redness, or a rash
  • Changes to the nipple, such as it becoming inverted
