Katy Perry is set to be honored with the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, despite recent controversies surrounding her upcoming album, 143.
The announcement came on August 15, revealing that Perry will take the stage at New York’s UBS Arena on Wednesday, September 11, to receive the award and deliver a special performance.
The MTV VMAs broadcast, scheduled for 8 p.m. ET, will feature Perry performing a medley of her greatest hits. This performance will follow in the footsteps of previous Video Vanguard recipients like Nicki Minaj and Shakira.
The award comes at a tumultuous time for Perry, who has faced criticism over her new singles “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes.” Both tracks were co-produced by Dr. Luke, who has been accused of rape. Additionally, the music video for “Lifetimes” is under scrutiny for alleged environmental damage due to unauthorized filming at Spain’s S’Espalmador island.
Despite these issues, Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s president of music and events, praised Perry as a “musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon.” He highlighted her “game-changing creative vision” and her impact on the global music scene, promising a memorable performance at the VMAs.
As Perry gears up for the September 20 release of 143, the Video Vanguard Award marks her sixth VMA win. She has previously been recognized for categories such as Best Collaboration for “E.T.” featuring Kanye West and Best Female Video for “Dark Horse” featuring Juicy J.
