Hannah Harper has been crowned the winner of Season 24 of American Idol following an emotional grand finale on Monday, May 11.
The 25-year-old Missouri native secured the title after competing against finalists Jordan McCullough and Keyla Richardson, who finished in second and third place, respectively.
Harper closed the night with an emotional performance of Chris Tomlin’s song At The Cross (Love Ran Red), singing through tears as fellow contestants joined her on stage to celebrate the milestone moment.
Her victory marked the culmination of a standout season that first captured viewers’ attention during auditions, when Harper moved judge Carrie Underwood to tears with an original song titled String Cheese.
The deeply personal song reflected Harper’s struggle with postpartum depression and the emotional challenges she faced as a mother.
During her audition, Harper explained that the inspiration came from a difficult period after childbirth when she found herself emotionally overwhelmed at home.
She recalled a moment involving her young son asking her to open his snack while she was struggling emotionally, saying the experience ultimately helped her realise the importance of motherhood and regain perspective.
Harper said the experience helped her overcome postpartum depression and inspired her to channel the journey into music.
Her emotional story resonated strongly with the judging panel, particularly Underwood, who described String Cheese as “the most relatable song” she had heard.
“You’re gorgeous. You look famous already,” Underwood said after the performance, praising Harper’s voice and stage presence.
The country music star added that Harper stood out as one of the contestants she would continue thinking about after auditions, saying she looked forward to hearing what she would perform next.
Underwood was the first judge to vote “yes,” backing Harper’s journey from the very beginning of the competition.
