Tommy DeCarlo, the lead singer of legendary rock band Boston, has died at the age of 60 following a battle with brain cancer.
DeCarlo’s death was confirmed Monday by his wife Annie and children, Talia and Tommy Jr., in a statement shared on Facebook.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9, 2026,” the family wrote.
The statement revealed that the singer had been diagnosed with brain cancer in September and fought the illness with “incredible strength and courage” until his final days.
“During this difficult time, we kindly ask that friends and fans respect our family’s privacy as we grieve and support one another. Rest in peace, Dad,” the family added.
Health Struggles and Treatment
Before his passing, DeCarlo’s family had launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of his medical treatment, raising more than $56,000 as of Monday.
According to the fundraising page, DeCarlo suffered a brain bleed in September and underwent an emergency craniotomy. During the surgery, doctors discovered two melanoma tumors in his brain and another spot on his lungs.
Despite the serious diagnosis, the singer initially showed signs of recovery and began treatment. However, he later suffered another brain bleed and remained hospitalized from November 27 to December 27.
In an update shared on Instagram on January 2, his family said he had returned home shortly after Christmas and was undergoing physical therapy.
“Physical therapy wasn’t easy, but our Dad was strong, determined, and a true fighter,” the family wrote at the time, adding that he was encouraged by visits from loved ones and the support of fans around the world.
DeCarlo joined Boston in 2007 after the band’s original lead singer, Brad Delp, died earlier that year.
Remarkably, DeCarlo’s rise to fame began when he posted covers of Boston songs online as a fan. His powerful vocals caught the attention of the band’s members, eventually leading to him becoming their new frontman.
Boston rose to global fame with classic rock hits including “More Than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” “Don’t Look Back,” “Amanda,” and “Rock & Roll Band.”
The band’s current lineup includes guitarist Gary Pihl, bassist Tracy Ferrie, drummer Jeff Neal and vocalist Beth Cohen.
In 2021, DeCarlo released an audiobook titled Unlikely Rockstar — The Tommy DeCarlo Story, which chronicled his unusual journey from an ordinary fan to the lead singer of one of America’s most iconic rock bands.
