A second-year Moi University student has died by suicide in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County.
The body of Dickson Mutinda, a business management student at Moi University Annex Campus, was found hanging from a truss in his room at Sugunanga Shopping Centre.
Police said a rope was tied around his neck. A suicide note was also discovered, in which Mutinda wrote that he “could not keep fighting.”
Mutinda’s colleagues told police that they left him in the room on February 24, 2026, before attending afternoon classes.
When they returned, they found the room locked from inside. They forced the door open and discovered Mutinda had taken his own life.
The body has been moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy, according to police.
Authorities say suicide cases are on the rise, with police recording up to five incidents daily, most involving men.
The World Health Organization links such cases to factors including joblessness, financial difficulties, academic pressures, legal problems, bullying, substance abuse, depression, bipolar disorder, previous suicide attempts, or family history of suicide. Police also note that personnel in security agencies are exposed to trauma that may contribute to suicidal tendencies.
