The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and Azam Media Group have raised concern over the rising cases of illegal live streaming of SportPesa League matches on social media platforms.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 20, 2025, FKF said matches are being illegally recorded and streamed either from inside stadiums or directly from television screens, a practice it termed piracy.
FKF said the broadcast and media rights for the SportPesa League are jointly held by Azam Group Limited and the Football Kenya Federation, with FKF retaining Free-To-Air rights.
“Any unauthorised recording, streaming or redistribution of SportPesa League matches is illegal and amounts to piracy,” FKF said.
The federation warned that illegal streaming hurts the league and its clubs by reducing broadcast and commercial revenues. It also weakens sponsorship value and denies clubs the full financial benefits of the competition.
“In the long run, this is harmful to the growth and development of Kenyan football,” FKF said.
FKF and Azam called on clubs, fans and all stakeholders to help protect the value of the league by respecting broadcast rights and discouraging illegal streaming in all forms.
They warned that legal and regulatory action will be taken against individuals or groups found to be involved in piracy or the illegal distribution of SportPesa League content.
