Early Life

Born ʻAhoʻeitu ʻUnuakiʻotonga Tukuʻaho on July 12, 1959, in Nukuʻalofa, Tonga, Tupou VI is the youngest child of King Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV and Queen Halaevalu Mataʻaho ʻAhomeʻe. He attended The Leys School in Cambridge, England (1973–1977), and later studied at the University of East Anglia from 1977 to 1980.

Military Service

Tupou VI began his career in the Tonga Defence Services in 1982, joining the naval arm. By 1987, he had risen to lieutenant commander and graduated from the US Naval War College. From 1990 to 1995, he commanded the VOEA Pangai, a Pacific-class patrol boat, overseeing peacekeeping operations in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

He furthered his education with a master’s degree in defense studies from the University of New South Wales in 1997 and a master’s in international relations from Bond University in Australia in 1999.

Tupou VI retired from the military in 1998 to serve in government, taking on simultaneous roles as Defense Minister and Foreign Minister, positions he held until 2004. In January 2000, he was appointed Prime Minister of Tonga, serving until his resignation in February 2006 amid growing pro-democracy protests. His resignation led to the appointment of Feleti Sevele, Tonga’s first non-aristocratic prime minister.

Following the death of his brother, King George Tupou V, Tupou VI ascended the throne in March 2012. He was formally crowned alongside Queen Nanasipauʻu in 2015 at Centenary Church in Nukuʻalofa, receiving holy anointment, a crown, a ring, and a scepter in the coronation ceremony.

During his reign, he faced a natural disaster in January 2022, when the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai submarine volcano and the resulting tsunami forced him to evacuate the Royal Palace. He returned safely a few days later.

Family Life

Tupou VI married his second cousin, Queen Nanasipauʻu Tukuʻaho, in 1982. The couple has three children:

  • Princess Lātūfuipeka Tukuʻaho (b. 1983), who became Tonga’s High Commissioner to Australia in 2012
  • Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala (b. 1985), married to Sinaitakala Fakafanua with four children
