Chip and Joanna Gaines are officially taking Fixer Upper out of Texas for the first time — and turning their dream of a family mountain getaway into reality.
The home renovation power couple, who rose to fame after Fixer Upper debuted on HGTV in 2013 and later launched their own Magnolia Network in 2021, have long remained devoted to their Waco, Texas roots. The Gaines family has continued to live on their farmhouse with their five children, far removed from Hollywood despite their international success.
Now, the couple is branching out with a major new project: a Colorado mountain vacation home designed with family at its heart.
Their latest series, Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House, premieres Tuesday, Dec. 9, as a three-part limited event. In the show, Chip and Joanna reveal why they decided to build their first-ever out-of-state home project.
“This is our first out-of-central Texas project,” Joanna Gaines, 47, explains. “I want it to feel like something I’ve put together for my family.”
A key reason the Gaines family — which includes sons Drake, 20, Duke, 17, and Crew, 7, alongside daughters Ella, 19, and Emmie, 15 — chose Colorado is their shared love of skiing. For nearly a decade, the family has been making regular trips to the mountains, often sharing their winter adventures on social media.
Exclusive photos from the series show the couple touring a mid-century home nestled in a wooded alpine setting. The property features a main house in need of a significant renovation, two guest houses, and direct access to a fast-flowing mountain river.
When the show was first announced, Chip and Joanna acknowledged the challenges that come with designing and building at high altitude. The goal, they said, was to transform the Rockies property into a modern family retreat while preserving its distinctive retro character.
“Colorado has come to be a special place for our family,” Joanna said. “Somewhere between ski trips and spring breaks over the last decade, a dream took root to carve out a place of our own. While taking Fixer Upper out of state meant a steep learning curve, our hope is that this home will far outlast us.”
Across three one-hour episodes, viewers will watch the family navigate multi-generational design needs, unexpected wildlife encounters, and hidden architectural features unique to the mountain home.
The Gaines children will also play a larger role in the series. In a preview clip, the couple’s eldest daughter, Ella, makes her design debut when Joanna reveals that Chip had an idea to give her creative control over one of the guest cottages.
As mother and daughter walk into the space, Ella confidently declares, “I’m accepting the challenge.”
