Angelina Jolie Says Château Miraval Legal Battle Is Taking a Toll: “I’m Getting Sick From Worry”

Angelina Jolie has described the emotional strain of her ongoing legal dispute with ex-husband Brad Pitt over their Château Miraval winery in newly revealed email exchanges.

In a May 2021 email to her business manager, included in legal documents reviewed by USA Today, Jolie expressed that the years-long conflict had become overwhelming.

“I need to remove all stress,” the Maleficent star wrote. “I honestly feel I am getting sick from worry. So I would like us to discuss better support. And not continuing relationships that you see cause me stress.”

She also appeared to reference her brother, James Haven, adding, “Financial situations like Jamie where I just give and give and don’t even get a thank you … is just wrong.”

The ongoing legal battle stems from Jolie’s 2021 decision to sell her share of the French winery she once co-owned with Pitt. Pitt alleges that the sale violated an agreement requiring mutual consent; Jolie has denied such an agreement ever existed.

Legal filings continue to escalate. In a November 2023 response included in documents made public this week, Jolie’s attorneys pushed back against what they described as Pitt’s “burdensome” demands in his reported $35 million lawsuit over the transaction.

“The burdensome nature of any production is a matter of Mr. Pitt’s own creation — he is suing Ms. Jolie for $35 million in damages,” her legal team said, according to People.

Another email from Jolie’s lawyers suggested Pitt is also seeking ongoing damages related to the winery’s operations, while accusing him of refusing to turn over documents related to what they say is a four-year nondisclosure agreement concerning alleged personal misconduct.

Jolie has previously alleged that Pitt was abusive during a 2016 flight, claims the actor has denied. No charges were filed following an FBI investigation.

This latest 286-page filing is part of Pitt’s continued effort to gain access to Jolie’s internal emails regarding the sale. Jolie’s legal team has invoked attorney-client privilege in refusing to hand them over.

Pitt first sued Jolie in 2022, claiming she improperly sold her stake to a third party. Jolie countersued, accusing Pitt of launching a “vindictive war” when she refused to sign an NDA that she said would have prevented her from speaking about the 2016 incident.

The pair finalized their divorce in December 2024, eight years after they married at Château Miraval in 2014. They share six children, now ranging in age from 17 to 24.
