Diplo is leaning into the joke — and the internet is eating it up. The superstar DJ reignited buzz around his viral claim that he once dated both Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, this time by posting a cheeky selfie with Trudeau himself.
On Monday, Diplo shared the photo to Instagram, captioning it with a wink to Perry’s catalog: “The one that got away.” In the image, both he and Trudeau pull exaggerated shocked expressions, as if caught in the middle of the world’s most unexpected love triangle.
The entertainment world wasted no time reacting. Paris Hilton dropped a laughing emoji, while songwriter Ryan Tedder simply commented, “Damn.” Fans joined in, with many noting that Diplo might just be the king of trolling in pop culture.
The joke first originated last month during Diplo’s appearance on the Smart Girl Dumb Questions podcast, where he casually reminisced about dating the “Dark Horse” singer in 2014. Then, without missing a beat, he added, “I did date Trudeau, too.” He followed it up by saying, “That was a weird one though. I’m just… not into politicians.” The podcast later confirmed Diplo was joking — but the internet had already run with it.
This isn’t the first time Diplo and Perry’s dating past has resurfaced with playful banter. In 2017, Perry ranked him third in a tongue-in-cheek list of her best lovers during a game with James Corden. Diplo responded on Twitter at the time, “I don’t even remember having sex,” later joking, “I won the bronze in the sex Olympics.”
Meanwhile, Perry and Trudeau’s romance continues to heat up. The new couple was first spotted sharing a private dinner in Montreal in July. Most recently, they held hands in Paris while celebrating Perry’s 41st birthday — their first official public appearance as a pair. Sources close to the couple say Trudeau is “crazy about her” and feels the two share chemistry on everything from family to politics to, surprisingly, French cuisine.
