Vinicius Junior Faces Criticism After Heated Reaction During El Clásico

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior is facing criticism from football analysts and former players after his reaction to being substituted in Sunday’s El Clásico raised concerns about his conduct and future at the club.

The Brazilian star was taken off in the 72nd minute during Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Barcelona. Instead of heading to the bench, Vinicius walked straight down the tunnel, appearing to ignore head coach Xabi Alonso. Cameras also captured him complaining angrily, saying: “Always me! I’m leaving the team! I’m leaving!”

His performances this season have been inconsistent, and reports in Spain suggest there is growing tension between Vinicius and Alonso. Discussions over a new contract have stalled, and sources say the player is considering leaving the club in 2026 if he feels his role and respect within the team do not improve.

Despite scoring five goals and providing four assists in La Liga this season, Vinicius has not found the net in the Champions League. Club officials and some teammates are said to be concerned about his attitude, and disciplinary action is being considered.

Former Uruguay international Diego Lugano criticised Vinicius strongly, saying his behaviour was damaging his reputation at the club.

“This mess at this level is very difficult to witness,” Lugano said. “Every weekend there is an argument. His prestige at Real Madrid will definitely drop.”

Former Brazil striker Luis Fabiano added that Vinicius should have shown respect to Rodrygo, the teammate who came on to replace him. “You can be angry, but you must leave the pitch quietly,” he said.

Former Real Madrid winger Steve McManaman also expressed disappointment, saying the game was bigger than any one player.

“It’s about the team, about winning, about going five points clear,” he said. “We shouldn’t be talking about someone upset over being substituted.”

The heated match at the Santiago Bernabéu also saw Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé score the goals for Real Madrid. However, Bellingham may also face scrutiny after cameras captured him making a gesture towards the crowd, similar to one that previously earned him a fine.

Speaking after the match, Bellingham focused on the victory rather than the controversy.

“It’s a very important win for us,” he said. “Everyone worked very hard, and we deserved the three points.”
