The Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) has released an updated list of member financial institutions covered under its deposit protection scheme. The announcement, made on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, confirms that 52 institutions — including 37 commercial banks, one mortgage finance institution, and 14 microfinance banks — are currently members of the scheme.
KDIC, established under the Kenya Deposit Insurance Act (Cap 487C), serves as the Resolution Authority mandated to protect depositors and promote stability in the country’s banking sector. The Corporation’s main role is to provide deposit insurance, enhance risk management, and ensure the timely resolution of troubled banks.
According to the public notice, the deposit insurance scheme is designed to protect customers against the loss of their deposits in the event of a bank failure. Under the guaranteed deposit protection framework, depositors are insured up to a maximum of Sh500,000. This amount is reimbursed immediately when a bank fails and is placed under liquidation.
KDIC also operates an Early Warning System (EWS) to monitor the performance of banks and detect risks early for timely intervention. In addition, it employs alternative resolution tools, such as the realization of assets, to help depositors recover amounts exceeding the guaranteed limit once the bank’s debts and assets are settled.
Only member institutions benefit from KDIC protection. Depositors covered include those with current accounts, savings accounts, fixed deposit accounts, foreign currency accounts with verified mandates, and designated trust accounts. The cost of the insurance is fully borne by member banks through annual premiums — depositors do not pay any charges for the protection.
KDIC noted that its principal objective is to safeguard depositors’ funds and contribute to financial stability in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030, which seeks to create a vibrant and globally competitive financial sector. The Corporation emphasized that a strong deposit insurance system helps prevent panic withdrawals and maintains public confidence in the financial system.
