Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the hit TV series Dawson’s Creek, has revealed that health challenges forced him to miss the much-anticipated cast reunion held on Monday in New York City.
Van Der Beek, who was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in November 2024, announced on Instagram Sunday that he was “gutted” about not being able to attend. He told fans he is currently battling two severe stomach viruses that left him “grounded at the worst possible moment.”
The reunion, organized by fellow cast member Michelle Williams, brought together stars including Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Busy Philipps at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Van Der Beek said he had been looking forward to the event since Williams first conceived the idea earlier this year, describing it as a chance to thank fans for supporting him during his cancer journey.

“I won’t get to stand on that stage and thank every soul in the theater for showing up for me, and against cancer, when I needed it most,” he wrote.
Despite his absence, fans were treated to a special surprise as Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to join the cast on stage and celebrate the beloved series.
Van Der Beek, 48, has been open about his cancer treatment and health struggles, often sharing updates with his followers online.
