Marseille captain Leonardo Balerdi has declared that Lionel Messi remains the best player in the world, even as Kylian Mbappe continues to shine for Real Madrid.
Speaking ahead of Marseille’s Champions League opener against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, Balerdi said Messi’s dominance will last until the Argentine legend retires.
“Until Messi retires, Messi will be the best player in the world,” Balerdi said. “But I’m sure Kylian is one of the best in the world, too. He’s been proving it for years, and this year he’s also at a great level.”
While praising Mbappe’s form in Madrid colours, the Marseille skipper made it clear his team has prepared to face the Spanish giants.
“If you look at the names on Real Madrid’s roster, it’s impressive. But we have to work the same way we do every weekend — stay focused. Any opportunity can change the course of the match. We’re ready to play against these great players. It’s a challenge, and we have to be smart,” he added.
Real Madrid, managed by Xabi Alonso, head into Tuesday’s clash unbeaten at the top of La Liga with four wins from four games. They face Espanyol in their next league fixture on September 20, as rivals Barcelona remain close behind, just two points adrift.
