Apple Faces Backlash After iPhone 17 Launch Sparks Criticism and Stock Drop

Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 17 launch has drawn mixed reactions, with users and investors expressing disappointment. The device was unveiled on September 9 during the company’s annual “Awe-Dropping” event, which Apple billed as its boldest design shift in years.

But instead of excitement, many users flooded social media with criticism, complaining about the new look of the Pro models, which feature a full-width camera bar. Some fans argued the design makes the phone look more like an Android device than a premium iPhone. “The ugliest iPhone yet,” one user posted on X, echoing the sentiment of many others.

The introduction of new colors, including Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue, also failed to impress, with fans mourning the removal of the classic black finish. The ultra-thin iPhone Air, measuring just 5.6 mm, generated buzz for its sleek design but later faced scrutiny over concerns about battery life and reduced camera features compared to the Pro versions.

The backlash quickly spilled into the markets. Apple’s stock dropped by 1.5 percent immediately after the launch and slid by more than 3 percent the next day, wiping out over $100 billion in market value. Analysts pointed to a lack of groundbreaking innovation, weak emphasis on artificial intelligence, and advance leaks that spoiled the surprise factor. They also noted that Apple’s decision to absorb nearly $1 billion in tariffs without increasing prices may put pressure on its profit margins.

This is not the first time Apple has faced criticism over its designs. Past changes like the notch, the camera bump, and the removal of the headphone jack were all ridiculed at first but later became industry standards. Experts believe the true test will be consumer demand in the months ahead.

If buyers embrace the slim iPhone Air and the Pro models deliver strong camera performance, the negative reaction could fade. However, with competitors pushing ahead on artificial intelligence and foldable technology, Apple’s cautious approach may prove risky for the company’s long-term growth.
