Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac has given his backing to teenage midfielder Jobe Bellingham, saying the youngster’s best role is playing deeper in midfield.
The 19-year-old, who joined Dortmund this summer, has been under the spotlight as he follows in the footsteps of his older brother Jude Bellingham. While his start to life in the Bundesliga has been mixed, Kovac believes the Englishman has shown maturity and potential.
Speaking ahead of Dortmund’s Bundesliga clash with Heidenheim, Kovac said Bellingham is more suited to the number six position, where he can see the game in front of him.
“I think his strengths lie more in the number six position,” Kovac told reporters. “He needs the game in front of him. We saw that in the last match, and I’m very happy with him. His attitude and motivation are excellent, and he is very mature for his age.”
Kovac also stressed that Dortmund, who have struggled for consistency, must show mental sharpness and resilience in their upcoming games.
Bellingham joined Dortmund as one of the club’s headline signings in 2025, seen both as a long-term investment and as part of a growing family legacy at the club. While he shone at the Club World Cup, his early Bundesliga games have highlighted the challenges of adapting to the pace and physicality of German football.
By placing him deeper in midfield, Kovac hopes to give the teenager the space to dictate play, break up opposition attacks, and grow into a more complete midfielder. For Dortmund, unlocking his potential in this role could be key to stabilising their midfield as they push for both domestic and European success.
Dortmund face Heidenheim this weekend before turning their attention to their Champions League opener against Juventus on September 16, where Bellingham is expected to continue in his deeper role.
