Jim Carrey, 62, has shared the real reason behind his return as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Surprisingly, it wasn’t a deep fascination with the character that drew him back.
In a candid moment, Carrey confessed his motivations during an interview with the Associated Press, jokingly admitting, “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”
This revelation comes two years after Carrey hinted at stepping away from the limelight.
In March 2022, he shared plans for retirement in an interview with Access Hollywood, stating, “I’m retiring. I’m being fairly serious.
If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s gonna be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break.”
At the time, Carrey expressed his contentment with a quieter life, enjoying painting, spirituality, and a sense of personal fulfillment.
“I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life,” he explained. “I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
In April 2022, he delved deeper into his spiritual journey, telling E! News, “I want to learn how to stay in an expanded state of consciousness and yet still be able to deal with the world and pour myself back into this little shoebox called ‘Jim Carrey’ in order to do something to find commonality with other human units.”
As for his iconic roles, Carrey admitted he has no interest in revisiting them without a fresh perspective.
He dismissed the idea of unoriginal sequels as inauthentic, adding, “Unless some genius person, director, auteur, comes to you with a completely new take… like if Chris Nolan came to me and said, ‘I wanna make Ace Ventura real and do something more interesting,’ then I might listen.
But after a certain time, there’s not one cell in your body that is that person anymore, so you end up just imitating what you did in the old days, and the original inspiration isn’t there.”
