Cornish landscape artist Dianne Griffiths has won the People’s Choice Award 2024 at the British Art Prize for her painting Driving Home, which depicts a Texaco petrol station on Trevemper Road near Newquay, Cornwall.
The artwork features the petrol station under a star-lit sky and captivated voters with its unique perspective.
Griffiths shared her excitement with BBC Radio Cornwall, saying she was overjoyed by the win, which placed her in the top 50 finalists of the prestigious competition organized by Artists & Illustrators magazine.
“I couldn’t sit still. I couldn’t eat for a little while, I was too excited,” she admitted. “I just kept reading the email.”
The painting was also purchased by the garage featured in the piece, marking a fitting conclusion to its creation.
Griffiths expressed her delight, saying, “The painting will be coming full circle, back home to Newquay.”
In addition to the award, Griffiths will be featured in a six-page spread in the February issue of Artists & Illustrators.
She described it as “lovely” that the garage wanted to own the painting, bringing the artwork back to its roots.
