Hampshire Students Create Art Exhibit Celebrating Corner Shops And Local Culture

Students from universities across Hampshire have come together to create a unique multi-media exhibition focused on convenience stores.

The Corner Shop and Portal into Other Worlds project is a collaboration between Solent University, Winchester School of Arts, and the charity Southampton Forward, which promotes local culture.

Creative producer Darryl Vydelingum, who spearheaded the project, was inspired by the stories of shopkeepers, noting that their experiences are often overlooked.

“The shopkeepers I spoke to were a big source of inspiration,” he said, emphasizing that their stories are rarely told.

Grace Dagnell, a student involved in the project, said it was important to showcase the diversity of cultures and personalities found in Southampton’s corner shops.

“It’s really important to highlight the cultures in Southampton, and all the different personalities you meet in each shop,” she shared.

The idea for the corner shop-inspired art project emerged while Southampton was bidding for the title of UK City of Culture.

Though the city did not win, many projects continued, including Vydelingum’s.

Local convenience store owners, including Fathey Singh of Nasz Sklep, which has served the community for over a decade, collaborated with the students to create artworks reflecting the stories behind each shop.

Singh expressed appreciation for the recognition of corner shop workers and how important they are to the community.

“I try to cater for all my customers, so I’ve got everything here, and that’s what makes it unique because you can get it at your doorstep,” he explained.

He added that, despite the rise of supermarkets, corner shops have only grown in importance.

Fashion students from Winchester School of Art designed outfits inspired by various occasions when people visit corner shops, including office wear, luxe wear, and party wear.

These designs were photographed by Solent University students, who also handled the models’ makeup and hair.

Solent student Megan O’Hara commented on the exaggerated nature of the outfits, saying, “It’s really cool to see all the different colours and designs on display.”

The exhibition highlights the enduring charm and cultural significance of corner shops in Southampton, celebrating both the shops themselves and the people who run them.
