Sarginsons, an aluminium foundry based in Coventry, has been awarded a £6 million grant to expand its workforce, invest in new equipment, and enhance its recycling infrastructure.
The grant will support a collaborative research programme aimed at developing lighter, more sustainable vehicle components in partnership with companies like Aston Martin.
The foundry aims to produce vehicle parts using 100% recycled aluminium, which will help reduce costs while maintaining performance standards.
The initiative aligns with efforts to make vehicles more environmentally friendly by decreasing reliance on newly mined aluminium.
As part of the project, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be utilized to design new chassis components for an existing Aston Martin model, helping to reduce development costs.
The programme is funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre, a not-for-profit organization, alongside Innovate UK, an innovation agency.
Gavin Shipley from Sarginsons expressed that this research could “lay the blueprint” for industries looking to enhance manufacturing efficiency in a sustainable manner, contributing to greener practices across sectors.
