Southampton captain Jack Stephens has been fined £50,000 ($66,535) and handed a two-game ban following his abusive remarks toward officials during last month’s Premier League match against Manchester United.
The incident occurred during Southampton’s 3-0 defeat on September 14th, when Stephens was sent off for a high challenge on United’s Alejandro Garnacho.
Following his dismissal, the 30-year-old defender engaged in a heated argument with referee Stuart Attwell, which resulted in an extraordinary incident report being filed.
In a statement, the FA confirmed, “The defender admitted that he used abusive and insulting words towards both the match referee and fourth official around the 79th minute after he had been sent off.”
The sanctions were imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission, and the detailed written reasons were provided in the FA’s official report.
Stephens has already served a three-match suspension for the red card, missing Southampton’s games against Ipswich Town, Everton, and Bournemouth.
With this latest decision, he will also sit out the upcoming matches against Arsenal and Leicester City.
Southampton, currently second from bottom in the Premier League with just one point, will be without their captain for these crucial fixtures as they continue to struggle in the league standings.
