Over time, washing machine drums can accumulate dirt, detergent residue, mold, and unpleasant odors. Regular cleaning of your washing machine drum ensures optimal performance and keeps your clothes fresh. Here’s a simple guide to cleaning a washing machine drum.
Materials You Will Need:
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Microfiber cloth or sponge
- Toothbrush (optional for detailed cleaning)
- Bleach (optional for deep cleaning, especially in front-load machines)
Step 1: Empty the Washing Machine
Ensure that the washing machine is empty before you start the cleaning process. This prevents damage and ensures proper cleaning.
Step 2: Run a Hot Water Cycle with Vinegar
Vinegar helps to break down detergent residue and kills bacteria and mold.
- For Top-Load Machines:
- Set your washing machine to the hottest water setting and the largest load capacity.
- Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum.
- Run the washing machine on a full cycle without adding clothes or detergent.
- For Front-Load Machines:
- Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the detergent compartment.
- Set the machine to a hot water cycle and start it.
Vinegar will help dissolve soap scum, grime, and remove odors.
Step 3: Run a Cycle with Baking Soda
Baking soda is excellent for eliminating odors and providing a gentle scrubbing effect.
- After the vinegar cycle is complete, add about 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the drum.
- Run another hot water cycle. This will help to further cleanse and deodorize the washing machine drum.
Step 4: Clean the Rubber Gasket (For Front-Load Machines)
The rubber gasket around the door of a front-load washing machine can harbor mold and mildew.
- Wipe it Down: Mix a solution of equal parts water and vinegar or use a small amount of bleach diluted with water.
- Use a microfiber cloth or an old toothbrush to scrub the gasket, paying attention to any visible dirt or mildew.
- Be sure to clean the inner crevices of the gasket, where moisture tends to get trapped.
Step 5: Wipe the Drum and Exterior
After running the cycles with vinegar and baking soda:
- Wipe the Drum: Use a microfiber cloth or sponge soaked in vinegar or mild detergent to wipe the inside of the drum. Pay attention to the door or lid seals.
- Wipe the Exterior: Clean the control panel, door, and exterior of the washing machine with a damp cloth.
Step 6: Run an Extra Rinse Cycle (Optional)
If you notice any lingering vinegar or baking soda smell, you can run an extra rinse cycle with just water to flush out any remaining residue.
Step 7: Leave the Door Open
After cleaning, leave the washing machine door or lid open to allow air circulation and prevent mold or mildew from forming.
