Fans of Lauryn Hill were met with disappointment this week as The Fugees announced the cancellation of their highly anticipated North American reunion tour.
Scheduled to begin on August 9, the tour was set to celebrate the anniversary of Hill’s iconic album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
On August 6, Variety confirmed that the tour was canceled, and ticketholders were informed of refunds.
However, the cancellation notice did not provide reasons for the tour’s abrupt end or details about potential rescheduling.
The next day, Lauryn Hill addressed the cancellation on Instagram. She explained that the decision to cancel the North American dates was due to low ticket sales, which she attributed to misleading “clickbait headlines” in the media.
In her Instagram post on August 7, Hill reflected on the situation: “Last year, I faced an injury that required rescheduling some of my shows. Unfortunately, sensationalist media coverage seems to have hurt ticket sales for the North American tour. This portrayal has overshadowed my genuine intentions and commitment to my music.”
Hill also reassured fans that the UK and European legs of the tour would continue as planned. She expressed her excitement about performing in these regions, where The Fugees have not played in over 25 years.
“Performing is a deep exchange of energy and emotion for me,” Hill wrote. “I am profoundly disappointed that I cannot perform these North American dates, and I am committed to giving my best in the upcoming European shows.”
The canceled North American tour was set to visit 18 cities, including Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles. The European tour will start on October 12 in Manchester, England, and will wrap up several weeks later in Amsterdam.
