The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced updates to the country’s banknotes.
Starting soon, new Sh50, Sh100, Sh200, Sh500, and Sh1000 notes will feature several changes.
The updated notes will now include the signatures of both CBK Governor Kamau Thugge and Principal Secretary for the National Treasury Chris Kiptoo.
Additionally, a new security thread with color-changing effects specific to each denomination will be introduced.
“The rest of the features will remain the same as those in the 2019 series. All banknotes currently in circulation remain legal tender and will continue to be used alongside the new notes,” CBK stated.
The release of the updated banknotes will begin with the Sh1,000 note, with other denominations to follow in the coming months.
This update comes five years after former President Uhuru Kenyatta introduced a new generation of banknotes aimed at combating embezzlement and addressing issues with counterfeit Sh1,000 notes.
