Billionaire entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria, co-founder of Patrón Tequila and the hair-care brand John Paul Mitchell Systems, has put his distinctive Balinese-style home in Hawaii on the market for $32.5 million.
The property, located on approximately three acres overlooking Kiholo Bay on Hawaii’s Kona Coast, features a 3,600-square-foot main residence with three bedrooms, multiple ponds, tropical landscaping, and expansive outdoor decks. But it is the home’s origin and design that make it truly extraordinary.
In the 1980s, DeJoria traveled to Bali and commissioned local artisans to build a temple-style house using traditional techniques and ironwood timber. Once constructed, the house was carefully dismantled, shipped across the Pacific, and reassembled on his property in Hawaii. About 50 local carpenters worked alongside dozens of Balinese craftsmen to ensure the design retained its authentic temple-style architecture. The project reportedly took several years to complete and cost millions of dollars.

The house stands out for its dramatic roof, covered in dragon-scale shingles with carved dragon heads at the corners. During heavy rains, water flows from the dragons’ mouths like fountains. The interior is filled with Asian antiques and imported furniture collected by DeJoria and his wife, Eloise, over the years, giving the property the feel of a secluded retreat. Its location near a nature preserve also provides significant privacy, with few neighboring homes.
DeJoria, who rose from living in his car in Los Angeles in the 1970s to co-founding John Paul Mitchell Systems with just $700, later co-founded Patrón Tequila, which Bacardi acquired for $5.1 billion. Known for his unconventional approach to life and business, DeJoria has applied the same bold thinking to his real estate ventures.
The Hawaii home, which has been in the DeJoria family for nearly four decades, is now being sold as one of their least-used properties. The couple owns a global real estate portfolio that includes multiple homes in Texas, California, and other locations around the world.
