Registrations on the government’s Boma Yangu housing platform have surpassed one million, highlighting strong demand for affordable housing across the country.
Data from the Affordable Housing Board shows that most applicants are interested in projects located in urban areas with access to key infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water, schools, markets and healthcare services.
Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga said the milestone shows growing public confidence in the Affordable Housing Programme.
“One million Kenyans committing to save towards owning a home is a strong sign of trust in the programme,” Hinga said.
However, the number of housing units currently under development is far lower than the demand. Government records show that about 262,913 housing units are under construction across 47 counties and 111 constituencies.
Officials say the large gap between registrations and available houses points to the need to speed up construction as the government continues to roll out affordable housing projects nationwide.
