Damson Idris has finally responded to growing speculation that he could be Marvel Studios’ choice to take over the role of T’Challa in Black Panther 3.
Speaking to Variety on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards, the F1: The Movie star addressed the rumors carefully, expressing gratitude for fan support while stopping short of confirming any talks with Marvel.
“I am thankful to the fans,” Idris said. “Of course it’s a rumor, but I love that movie. I love the world. I’m glad that everyone is seeing the future of that too. It’s moving in a brilliant direction, and I’m excited for the third one.”
Speculation around the role intensified earlier this year after an industry report suggested Marvel may be reconsidering its earlier stance on recasting T’Challa following the death of Chadwick Boseman. Although Marvel has previously indicated it would not replace Boseman’s iconic portrayal, the renewed discussion quickly put Idris at the center of fan conversations online.
The actor added to the intrigue during a televised appearance last year on Today, when co-anchor Craig Melvin asked directly whether he had spoken to Marvel about becoming the next Black Panther. Idris reacted with a playful groan and attempted to dodge the question by replying, “Yes-no!”, prompting laughter and further speculation.
When pressed on whether he would accept the role if Marvel offered it, Idris answered without hesitation, simply saying, “Yes.”
Idris has also shown a sense of humor about the rumors. In January, after a post on X claimed he had “reportedly turned down” the role, the actor responded sarcastically in a now-deleted reply, joking that he had also turned down playing James Bond, starring alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, and leading an Eddie Murphy biopic.
