Former Texas Longhorns standout and ex-NFL player Jordan Shipley is recovering in hospital after suffering severe burns in an accident at his Texas ranch. The 40-year-old is currently listed in critical but stable condition, according to his family.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 6, near Shipley’s hometown of Burnet, Texas. In a statement released by University of Texas Senior Associate Athletics Director John Bianco, Shipley’s family confirmed that the former wide receiver was operating machinery on his ranch when it suddenly caught fire.
“Jordan was involved in an accident this afternoon near his hometown of Burnet,” the family said. “He was operating a machine that caught fire. He was able to free himself, but not before sustaining severe burns.”
Despite his injuries, Shipley managed to reach one of his ranch workers, who rushed him to a nearby hospital. He was later airlifted to a medical facility in Austin, where he remains under close medical supervision.

Shipley’s younger brother, Jaxon Shipley—also a former Texas Longhorns receiver—shared an emotional message on Instagram, asking fans and supporters to keep Jordan in their prayers.
“Please pray for full healing and no infections or other complications on his road to recovery,” Jaxon wrote. “His life was spared today by the grace of God and the sheer will to live.”
Their father, Bob Shipley, later provided an update on Facebook, revealing that Jordan is undergoing multiple surgeries to treat his burns. He noted that doctors are closely monitoring the risk of infection and pneumonia.
Off the field, Shipley is a family man and businessman. He married his wife, Sunny Leigh Shipley, in Nashville in 2011, and the couple recently celebrated 13 years of marriage. They share two young sons, and just days before the accident, Sunny posted photos from their joyful Christmas celebrations.
Following his football career, Shipley transitioned into real estate and is now the owner and broker of Shipley Ranches. His brother Jaxon also works with the company as a real estate agent.
