Former Chelsea star Oscar is reportedly set to retire from professional football following a frightening health incident at his boyhood club, Sao Paulo. The 34-year-old midfielder collapsed during a training-ground exercise test and was later diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a condition that affects heart rate and blood pressure.
Oscar was hospitalized after collapsing while using an exercise bike during an interval test at Sao Paulo’s training facility. He was admitted to the ICU for monitoring, and further medical evaluations confirmed he suffered vasovagal syncope, which can cause sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure. Following discussions with the club, Oscar has informed Sao Paulo of his decision to retire, according to Brazilian outlet Globo, with a formal announcement expected soon.
The news brings an abrupt pause to a career that began at Sao Paulo, flourished at Chelsea, and included a high-profile stint in China before his emotional return to Brazil last year. His comeback season in Brazil had already been interrupted by a fractured vertebra, during which early signs of potential heart issues reportedly appeared. The latest health scare has reinforced the long-term risks, prompting the midfielder to prioritize his well-being over continuing his professional career.
Oscar reassured fans on Instagram, writing: “Everything will be alright, God willing.”
The midfielder rejoined Sao Paulo last December on a three-year deal after nearly eight years in China, where he was one of the league’s standout performers. Earlier in his career, he made 203 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 38 goals and winning two Premier League titles, the Europa League, and the League Cup. In 2017, he completed a record transfer to Shanghai SIPG, where he continued to win trophies and earn significant acclaim.
