Popular Twitch streamer Pokimane, real name Imane Anys, has opened up to fans about why she practices celibacy, describing it as a personal choice with numerous benefits.
In a TikTok video shared on December 4, the 27-year-old started by asking her followers if she could share “a secret” before explaining that celibacy, for her, can range “from not kissing on the first date to saving yourself for marriage.”
While demonstrating her makeup routine, Pokimane described celibacy as “a whole spectrum” with “so many upsides.” She explained that avoiding physical and emotional intimacy early on helps prevent attachment to incompatible partners. “We often think that falling in love is a mystical, rare experience. But sometimes, it’s really just hormones and chemicals,” she said.

Another benefit, she noted, is the ability to preserve her energy and focus on herself. “A surefire way to avoid an emotional vampire is simply not to get close so that they can sink their teeth into you,” she joked, before adding, “Last, but certainly not least, less stress, less liability, and less risk of anything unwanted happening. There’s just about no downside to [taking] your time.”
Pokimane also reflected on cultural trends, suggesting that celibacy could be “the new counterculture” in today’s hypersexualized society. She emphasized the importance of respecting others’ choices and staying true to oneself. In the video caption, she wrote that she has “always been slow to warm up to people” and “doesn’t like to center [her] life around romantic or intimate relationships.”
The revelation comes shortly after Pokimane shared that she purchased an engagement ring for herself. “I bought an engagement ring for myself,” she said, explaining that fans had suggested she treat herself. “A ring at Bulgari that I just fell in love with. … It felt like way too much to get for myself. But then the more I thought about it, I was like, I hope someday I actually get engaged.”
