Ezequiel David Pereyra, a former hotel employee currently in custody and awaiting trial for allegedly supplying Payne with narcotics, has spoken out, insisting the tragedy could have been avoided. According to Pereyra, the singer was visibly distressed and intoxicated in the hotel lobby, yet staff chose to move him back to his room instead of seeking medical help.
Pereyra alleges that Payne was carried “like a sack of potatoes” while unconscious, claiming hotel workers feared causing a scene that might disturb other guests. “He didn’t have to die,” Pereyra said, adding that Payne had been consuming a dangerous combination of alcohol, cocaine and antidepressants — and that ignoring his condition was a serious breach of duty.
Hours later, Payne fell from a third-floor balcony at the upscale CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. Toxicology reports confirmed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system. The official autopsy concluded he died from “multiple trauma” and extensive internal and external hemorrhaging consistent with a high fall.
Pereyra’s account suggests a crucial missed opportunity: he believes that calling an ambulance when Payne lost consciousness could have saved his life. Instead, he claims, staff prioritized discretion over safety.
In the aftermath, five individuals connected to Payne’s final hours — including hotel employees and an acquaintance — have been charged in Argentina with offenses ranging from supplying narcotics to negligent homicide. Authorities say the investigation remains active.
