Eugene “Big U” Henley has filed a heartfelt plea with a federal judge, requesting temporary release from jail so he can participate in the Islamic burial rites for his murdered son, 34-year-old Jabari Henley.
The request, submitted this week, comes as Henley faces federal charges in a high-profile RICO case.
In the court filing, Henley’s attorneys describe the tragic loss as an “unparalleled human tragedy” and argue that attending the funeral is not merely a personal preference, but a fundamental expression of human dignity.
Henley and his family are devout Muslims, and Islamic funeral customs require immediate family members to take part in essential rituals, including the ritual washing (Ghusl al-mayyit) and shrouding (Kafn) of the body. The request specifically seeks permission for Friday, November 21, for private rites only, not the public burial scheduled for the following day.

“To deny this narrow request would inflict an additional, profound layer of suffering upon a parent already enduring the unimaginable grief of burying their child,” the filing reads.
Several letters from family members and supporters have been submitted, urging the judge to show compassion. One letter states, “This is not only a time for our family to lay Jabari to rest, but also an opportunity for Mr. Henley to find some measure of peace and closure as a grieving father.” Another adds, “Allowing Eugene to attend his son’s funeral would be a compassionate gesture… It will reinforce the values of empathy and understanding within our justice system.”
Henley is currently held at MDC Los Angeles in pre-trial detention. While the government opposes his request, his legal team has offered stringent safety measures, including electronic monitoring, private security, a secured bond, and a controlled itinerary to ensure compliance.
The decision now rests with U.S. District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha, who will determine whether Henley can leave federal custody under strict supervision to honor his son in accordance with his faith.
Jabari Henley was tragically shot and killed on Halloween night in South Los Angeles. Authorities have not made any arrests in the case, leaving the family mourning and seeking justice.
