Telegram Users Report Access Disruptions on Safaricom Network

Millions of Kenyans have reported difficulties accessing Telegram Messenger on the Safaricom network, with the app failing to load or refresh messages despite strong mobile data signals. The disruption, which began without any official notice, has affected users across the country who rely on Telegram for daily communication.

The issue appears to be limited to Safaricom mobile data. Many users say they are still able to access Telegram normally when connected to WiFi or when using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). This has led to widespread speculation that the service may have been intentionally restricted at the network level. Safaricom has not yet issued a statement to confirm or deny this.

Telegram is widely used in Kenya for business operations, customer service, school communication, community coordination and media content sharing. The disruption has therefore caused delays in work processes and interruptions in channels that many people depend on for timely information.

The timing of the issue has raised further attention in the education sector. In recent weeks, concerns have increased over Telegram channels being used to leak ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination papers. Education officials have warned that some groups on the platform have been circulating illegal access to exam materials. This has led to speculation that the service disruption may be connected to efforts to curb exam cheating.

However, the lack of an official clarification has left users frustrated. Many are questioning why a platform heavily relied upon for everyday communication could be restricted without any public explanation.

The situation remains ongoing, with users hoping for a clear statement from both Safaricom and relevant authorities. The incident has also reignited discussion on how to balance national security concerns with the need to maintain open access to digital communication tools in the country.
