The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert warning of heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, including Nairobi, over the next week.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the weatherman said the rainfall currently affecting parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley is expected to intensify to more than 30mm within 24 hours. The rains will spread to the Highlands East of the Rift Valley — including Nairobi — as well as the South-Eastern Lowlands from Thursday, October 23, 2025, to October 30, 2025.
“The heavy rainfall is expected to continue and extend to parts of the North-East from 30th October 2025, marking the likely onset of the OND 2025 short rains over many areas,” the department said.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay vigilant, as the rains may trigger floods and landslides. The public is urged to avoid walking or driving through moving water, keep off open fields and trees during storms, and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
Counties expected to be affected include Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Nairobi, and parts of Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni.
The meteorological department also urged local authorities and humanitarian agencies to prepare for possible disruptions and to ensure that drainage systems are cleared to minimize flooding impacts.
