Former U.S. presidential candidate and Utah Senator Mitt Romney has spoken out following the death of his sister-in-law, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, who passed away in California last week.
In a statement to the media, Senator Romney said his family is devastated by the loss. “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time,” the statement read.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, 64-year-old Carrie Romney was found dead on Friday, October 10, in a parking lot in Valencia, California.
Authorities said homicide investigators arrived at the scene around 8:30 p.m., where they discovered Carrie’s body in the 24500 block of Town Center Drive. The investigation into her death is still ongoing. Officials said the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the exact cause of death.
A representative from the Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a woman had either jumped or fallen from a nearby parking structure, located next to the Hyatt Regency hotel. According to NBC Los Angeles, the structure is five stories high.
Records from the Medical Examiner’s Office confirm Carrie Romney died on Friday. Her cause of death is currently listed as “deferred”, meaning it remains under investigation. Her body has been declared ready for release.
Carrie Romney was married to one of Mitt Romney’s brothers. The Romney family has requested privacy as they mourn her passing.
