Oscar-nominated actress and Grammy-winning singer Andra Day has claimed she’s broke and on the verge of eviction — and she blames her former manager’s “greed” for it.
According to a new lawsuit, Day says she can’t even afford to pay her minimum credit card balance after her ex-manager, Jeff Evans, allegedly stole from her.
Evans, a music executive, had earlier filed a lawsuit against the Rise Up hitmaker, accusing her of breaching their contract and owing him nearly Sh146 million ($1 million).
However, Day hit back with a countersuit, calling Evans a “faithless fiduciary” who allegedly scammed her “with blindless greed.”
“He siphoned so much money from Day — a quadruple-platinum hitmaker and Golden Globe Best Actress winner — that he left her facing eviction, unable to pay the monthly minimum on her credit card debt, and without sufficient funds to tour,” her filing states.

Day, who gained international fame for her 2015 anthem Rise Up, won a Golden Globe in 2021 for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday — a role that also earned her an Oscar nomination. Most recently, she starred alongside Glenn Close in Lee Daniels’ Netflix thriller The Deliverance.
Court documents reveal that Day was introduced to Evans by Stevie Wonder’s wife and later signed with his companies, Buskin Records and BassLine Management, in 2011. But after years of financial disputes, she terminated her relationship with BassLine in March 2024.
Evans now claims he and his team are “owed a minimum of $850,000” in unpaid fees from Day’s acting work and music publishing deals, including earnings from The Deliverance.
Day’s legal team counters that “the Buskin Defendants have admitted to failing to pay Day [at least] $575,486.00” — an amount she “believes is significantly more.”
The ongoing legal fight has shed light on the financial struggles of one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed performers, with fans expressing shock at her situation.
