Real Madrid are reportedly preparing a massive €150 million (£130 million) bid to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri, reigniting their long-standing interest in the Spanish international.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner is, however, seen as untouchable at the Etihad Stadium, with City boss Pep Guardiola and club president Khaldoon Al-Mubarak keen to keep him for the long term. Sources indicate the Premier League champions have no plans to sell one of their most valuable players.
Rodri, 29, has become one of the most influential midfielders in world football since joining City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for £62.6 million ($85 million). His performances were instrumental in helping the club secure multiple domestic titles and guiding Spain to victory in the European Championship.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez reportedly views Rodri as the ideal successor to Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, whose recent departures have left a gap in Madrid’s midfield. While earlier reports suggested Real would not go beyond €100 million for the Spaniard, the club now appears ready to raise their offer to convince City to negotiate.
However, City are determined to resist any advances. Rodri’s current contract runs until 2027, and the club is reportedly preparing a lucrative extension to ensure he remains in Manchester.
Guardiola has often praised Rodri’s crucial role in City’s success. Speaking to Sky Sports, the manager said:
“With him, we are a better team — no doubt. The holding midfielder has to never be in the highlights, but without him, we could not do what we are doing. Internally, all team-mates and staff know how important and decisive he is. Massively important for us.”
