Prince William has made a rare reference to his younger brother Prince Harry, despite the ongoing rift between the two.
Speaking on Eugene Levy’s Apple TV+ series The Reluctant Traveler, William reflected on his upbringing as a royal and how it shaped his hopes for his children, especially his eldest son, 12-year-old Prince George, who is expected to become king one day.
“Obviously, I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do, a world and a job that actually does impact people’s lives for the better,” William said. “That is caveated with, I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past, that Harry and I had to grow up with — and I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.”
William, 43, stressed that he wants to bring positive change to the monarchy.
“Change for good,” he said. “And I embrace that and I enjoy that change — I don’t fear it. That’s the bit that excites me, is the idea of being able to bring some change. Not overly radical change, but changes that I think need to happen.”
The remark comes at a time when relations between the two brothers remain strained. Harry and his wife Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and moved to the United States. Since then, Harry has repeatedly spoken about family tensions, including in his 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, his 2022 Netflix series, and his 2023 memoir Spare.
Harry has said he would “love reconciliation” with his family, but efforts remain limited. During his UK visit last month, he met with his father King Charles for less than an hour, but no meeting took place with William.
Royal experts say reconciliation is unlikely soon, citing William’s concerns about a “lack of trust” and fears that private family discussions could become public.
